The federal government has decided to offer relief on electricity bills for people affected by recent floods. Sources say the relief will likely include removal of certain taxes and fixed charges. The goal is to ease the financial burden on flood-hit families who are already struggling to recover.
Officials are considering waiving the General Sales Tax (GST), Fuel Cost (FC) Surcharge, and fixed electricity charges. Relief may also include ending GST and excise duty on fuel price adjustments. These changes are being discussed at the policy level and could be announced soon.
The plan also proposes removing income tax, additional taxes, and retailer sales tax from electricity bills. If approved, this package could significantly reduce monthly bills for thousands of flood-affected households. The government aims to ensure that recovery support reaches people on the ground.
Widespread flooding in Punjab has damaged large areas of agricultural land and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Farmers and rural communities have been hit the hardest. Many areas remain submerged, and basic services like electricity and water are limited or disrupted.
Earlier this week, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the government to declare an agricultural emergency. He also demanded a complete waiver of electricity bills for farmers. The proposed relief measures now under review reflect growing political pressure and public demand for urgent action.
